Since the future is all known and predicted from the beginning - why the delay until the predicted end comes?

What is God waiting for?

God is waiting for His character to be fully and perfectly reproduced in you and me so we are not eternally lost at His second coming! In Scripture this experience is spoken of under the symbols of Jesus being lifted and the symbol of a marriage.

Jesus said:

1 John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

John 12:32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all [men] unto me.

12:33 This he said, signifying what death he should die.

The unfallen universe were all drawn to Jesus at His crucifixion but this has not happened for all on earth yet. Jesus needs to be lifted up again in the lives of His believers. This is what He is waiting to accomplish in His believers.

Isaiah 62:2 And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory: and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the LORD shall name.

62:3 Thou shalt also be a crown of glory in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of thy God.

62:4 Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy land any more be termed Desolate: but thou shalt be called Hephzibah, and thy land Beulah: for the LORD delighteth in thee, and thy land shall be married.

62:5 For [as] a young man marrieth a virgin, [so] shall thy sons marry thee: and [as] the bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride, [so] shall thy God rejoice over thee.

2 Corinthians 11:2 For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present [you as] a chaste virgin to Christ.

The wedding between Christ and His followers is going on now in Heaven and is parallel to the removal of sin that was foreshadowed in type on the Day of Atonement in Israel. Jesus said to His disciples:

John 12:32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

12:33 Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.

12:34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

12:35 Let your loins be girded about, and [your] lights burning;

12:36 And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately.

12:37 Blessed [are] those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.

So that is our current position today – waiting. We are waiting for Jesus to come again and He is waiting for us to accept Him now as our Lord and Master, enter into His death to self, and co-operate with Him in the reproduction of His character-likeness in us. The delay is foretold by Jesus in the parable of the ten virgins:

Matthew 25:1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.

25:2 And five of them were wise, and five [were] foolish.

25:3 They that [were] foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:

25:4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.

25:5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.

25:6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.

25:7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.

25:8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.

25:9 But the wise answered, saying, [Not so]; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.

25:10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.

25:11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.

25:12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.

25:13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

In the parable it makes it appear that the delay is on the part of the Lord, the bridegroom. However, the speed and lack of delay between when the harvest of the earth is mature (people who have developed the character of Jesus, and are married to Jesus) and the Lord of the harvest reaping the harvest is accurately pictured in this portion of another story.

Mark 4:29 But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in the sickle, because the harvest is come.

The Lord's knowledge of the future does not bring the future to pass. God knows the end from the beginning.

Isaiah 46:10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times [the things] that are not [yet] done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:

God waits for the complete fulfillment of His plans to happen, then He comes. We are told this about His first coming also.

Galations 4:4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,

4:5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

4:6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

Eve believed that the Messiah was born when she had her first child. However there was to be a long delay until the fulness of time was come and Mary bore her firstborn.

The delay is known and allowed by God to give the greatest chance and opportunity for all to be ready for His sudden, unexpected by many, coming.

2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

3:11 [Seeing] then [that] all these things shall be dissolved, what manner [of persons] ought ye to be in [all] holy conversation and godliness,

3:12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

3:13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

3:14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

Now is the time of preparation. Now we should be looking for and hastening His coming by developing His character as our own.
