What Benefit To Others Is My Knowing The Future?

Preparation and planning are the two big benefits of knowing what is in your future. You can help others in preparing and planning for their future if you have that experience yourself.

It is better than knowing beforehand which horse is going to win the race to know what the future holds. There is more than a certain amount of money at stake to know your immediate and eternal future.

The most important preparation needed for meeting the future is getting to know Jesus. This takes time to know His voice. It takes time to know Him well enough to be able to anticipate what His actions might be in given circumstances. It takes time to learn to trust Him and above all to learn to distrust yourself and loose all confidence in yourself while at the same time having total confidence in Jesus.

The reason you want to know Jesus is that He will guide you through the future changes that are coming on the world. If you have learned to know and trust Jesus, you will trust Him in the crisis and know His voice and be able to read His messages to you. Likewise you will be able to help others with the help in Jesus that you yourself have experienced. Unless you know Jesus you will not be able to help others.

So in summary, the big preparation needed for meeting the future is to know and trust Jesus and know how to communicate with Him. Knowing this you can help others know and experience of Jesus that you have.

What about planning? What planning is needed?

The planning needed is basically developing a lifestyle that centers on Jesus. Jesus will be in charge of every department of life if you let Him. This means specifically and fundamentally, your thought life.

In the book Counsels for the Church (CCh) by Ellen White, chapter 35 – An Appeal to Youth, we find this instruction and advice:

Many profess to be on the Lord's side, but they are not; the weight of all their actions is on Satan's side. By what means shall we determine whose side we are on? Who has the heart? With whom are our thoughts? Upon whom do we love to converse? Who has our warmest affections and our best energies? If we are on the Lord's side, our thoughts are with Him, and our sweetest thoughts are of Him. We have no friendship with the world; we have consecrated all that we have and are to Him. We long to bear His image, breathe His Spirit, do His will, and please Him in all things. {CCh 185.2}

True education is the power of using our faculties so as to achieve beneficial results. Why is it that religion occupies so little of our attention, while the world has the strength of brain, bone, and muscle? It is because the whole force of our being is bent in that direction. We have trained ourselves to engage with earnestness and power in worldly business, until it is easy for the mind to take that turn. This is why Christians find a religious life so hard and a worldly life so easy. The faculties have been trained to exert their force in that direction. In religious life there has been an assent to the truths of God's word, but not a practical illustration of them in the life. {CCh 185.3}

To cultivate religious thoughts and devotional feelings is not made a part of education. These should influence and control the entire being. The habit of doing right is wanting. There is spasmodic action under favorable influences, but to think naturally and readily upon divine things is not the ruling principle of the mind. {CCh 185.4}

The mind must be educated and disciplined to love purity. A love for spiritual things should be encouraged; yea, must be encouraged, if you would grow in grace and in the knowledge of the truth. Desires for goodness and true holiness are right so far as they go; but if you stop here, they will avail nothing. Good purposes are right, but will prove of no avail unless resolutely carried out. Many will be lost while hoping and desiring to be Christians; but they made no earnest effort, therefore they will be weighed in the balances and found wanting. The will must be exercised in the right direction. I will be a wholehearted Christian. I will know the length and breadth, the height and depth, of perfect love. Listen to the words of Jesus: "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled." Matthew 5:6. Ample provisions are made by Christ to satisfy the soul that hungers and thirsts for righteousness. {CCh 185.5}

A correct thought life is greatly aided and assisted by a correct diet and daily drinking pure water and avoiding the popular drinks and taking daily exercise – for example, walking two miles a day. If the brain is not healthy it is difficult, if not impossible, to cultivate pure thoughts centered on Jesus.

Centering the thought life on Jesus requires us to do what Jesus would do in your place and circumstances. This means that serving and blessing others is part of a healthy thought-life. Bible reading and study and avoiding filling the mind with untrue or unclean thoughts or sights or sounds, is part of the preparation needed to Know Jesus and be prepared to let Him lead us through the future changes coming on the world.

There are a number of practical considerations which are part of the practical preparation for the future. Finances are a consideration. Get out of debt and stay out of debt. Debt will hamper your choices in a crisis. What you spend your money on will show where your heart and mind are. In New York they have a saying: “Put your money where your mouth is!” Jesus said it this way:

If ye love me, keep my commandments.” John 14:15

Where you live and what you do for a living is important. Get out of the city into the country as soon as possible. City living greatly restricts your options in a crisis. Country living lets your mind have more freedom to focus on Jesus and His Person and ways. To have a garden and be as free as possible for a home-grown food supply is necessary in a crisis. Food and water are necessities of life that may be very difficult to obtain in as big city in a time of crisis.

The word “crisis” keeps coming up. Yes, the world is already in a crisis. In time of crisis the routine weather, rainfall, traffic conditions, social conditions, government control, communications – everything changes. A crisis condition means that nothing is as usual and nothing can be depended on. The only thing you can depend on, is that nothing is dependable. This is why it is so important to have control of your thoughts and have the communication with Jesus known and experienced because in a crisis you will do what you habitually do. That is why an important part of preparation is to get correct and optimal habits of thought and be in a position to move and act as directed by Jesus.

Knowing the future opens up the whole world of coming events to your knowledge and gives you both the incentive and the means (knowing Jesus) to prepare for the coming crisis so that it does not overtake you as an overwhelming surprise.

Getting prepared for the coming crisis puts you in a position to help others know about what is coming and how to prepare.

Isaiah 26:20 Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast.

26:21 For, behold, the LORD cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.
